Introduction

Gayip is the Woiwurrung word for 'Corroboree'.

In earlier times Gayip involved an inter-clan gathering of related Aboriginal groups who used this time to advance their own spirituality, peace and unity through such means as:

  • Initiation ceremonies
  • Storytelling, dancing and singing
  • The rekindling of friendships and relationships formed
  • Trading goods
  • Arranging marriages
  • Settlement of disputes
  • Offering of support in times of sorrow or adversity

The prayer and reflection services herein are offered as Gayip-type experiences that schools might use and adapt for their particular contexts and circumstances. In making use of these services, a highly recommended practice based on traditional Aboriginal custom is to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which you gather.
