Healesville Sanctuary

Healesville Sanctuary lies within the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people. It is an ideal place to learn more about Aboriginal culture.  The spirit of the land is presented through encounters with wildlife, native flora and Indigenous stories.  Your students will gain a rich understanding of the Australian environment, its wildlife and what Australians are doing to care for and conserve it.

Programs for Students

Dreaming the Indigenous Way

Celebrate the world's oldest living culture in the heartland of history. Participate in the re-telling of a Dreamtime story, create deeper learning experiences for your students and explore culture through face painting, dance and up close animal encounters.

If you want to further challenge your students a self- guided Learning Log is available that encourages deeper thinking about wildlife and our relationship with the natural environment. Respect for the Land, the Wurundjeri Way

Explore the culture, beliefs, social structure, history and land management practices of the Wurundjeri people whose lands encompass the area where Healesville Sanctuary is today. Learn about bush tucker plants, fibre and medicinal plants, technology and tools and develop questions to enquire how to live in harmony with the plants and animals of Australia. Suitable for VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies Unit  3, Area of Study 1- Relationships with Outdoor Environments.

Burra Burra Yan

Led by Murrundindi, this exclusive guided walk through the protected Coranderrk Bushland offers an authentic experience of Victorian Indigenous culture. Find yourself immersed in the beauty of the surrounding Australian bushland and experience it through the eyes of its traditional custodians. Hear traditional Dreaming stories, discover the medicinal and food uses of plants and learn about the boomerang. Suitable for Middle Years and up.

Spirit of the Land

Healesville Sanctuary presents a unique opportunity to experience the Coranderrk Bushland as it comes alive at night. ‘Spirit of the Land’ is offered to small groups to share with Murrundindi his personal story and the unique history of this special and tranquil location.
